Pick the closest clinic and give them a call. Tell them you’d like the HALO chip placed and they’ll book you in. At the visit, your veterinary team checks that your dog is healthy enough for the procedure.
Getting ready
Tell the clinic about any medications your dog takes, any allergies (including to skin glues or adhesives), any bleeding problems, and any skin conditions.
Your dog usually doesn’t need to skip a meal. No sedation or general anesthetic is used. If your clinic tells you something different, follow their instructions.
If you want to bathe or groom your dog, do it a day or two before. The area will need to stay dry for a while afterwards.

- Keep the area clean and dry. No baths, swimming or grooming of that area until your vet says it’s OK.
- Leave the patch on until your vet tells you to remove it, or until it comes off by itself. Don’t peel off the glue; it flakes away on its own.
- Stop your dog from licking, scratching or rubbing the spot. Your vet may suggest a cone or a recovery suit.
- Skip harnesses or backpacks that press on the shoulders for now. A normal collar is fine.
- Gentle walks on a lead are fine. Avoid rough play, jumping and dog parks for a few days.
- Look at the site once a day. A little tenderness, or a small firm bump under the skin, is common in the first few days.
- Redness, swelling or heat that gets worse after the first 48 hours
- Any discharge, pus, bleeding that won’t stop, or a bad smell
- The opening coming apart, or the chip visible or poking through the skin
- The chip seeming to have moved far from where it was placed
- Your dog seeming unwell: tired, off their food, feverish, or constantly bothering the site
